What is Jee - Joint Entrance Examination (JEE):

Joint Entrance Examination is an engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India. It is constituted by two different examinations - JEE Main and the JEE Advanced. The exams are of the objective pattern. JEE Advanced is regarded internationally as one of the most challenging undergraduate admission tests.

What is an IIT?

The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) is an autonomous public technical and research university located in India.[1] They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as institutions of national importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance.[2][3] The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes.[4] Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council (IIT Council), which oversees their administration. The Minister of Human Resource Development is the ex officio Chairperson of the IIT Council.[5] As of 2018, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IITs is 11,279.[6] The only major requirement to admit to these institutions is to pass the JEE Advanced.

How to get selected in IIT -

One has to clear both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced to get into IIT.

what is Jee mains?

JEE Main has two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may opt for either or both of them. Both papers contain multiple-choice questions. Paper 1 is for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses and is conducted only online. Paper-2 is for admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses and is conducted offline only. From January 2020 an additional Paper - 3 is being introduced for B.Planning courses separately.[2]

JEE Main, unlike JEE Advanced, has a fixed exam structure and is not subject to change every year. Paper-1 is of three hours duration and consists of thirty multiple-choice (single-correct) questions in each of the three subjects (physics, chemistry, and maths). 4 marks are awarded for correct answers and 1 mark is deducted for incorrect answers.

A new pattern consisting of 20+5 questions per subject is introduced in January 2020 with 20 multiple choice questions + 5 numerical type questions. In multiple-choice questions 4 marks are awarded for correct answers and no marks are deducted from numerical type questions.[3]

From 2013 to 2016, the marks obtained in the class XII school board examination used to be accorded a 40% weightage in deciding the JEE Main all India ranks
